The biggest problem may be lack of communication. (Hmm… lack of communication? What an unusual problem!) How do you decide if you’re for or against without having all the information? Sure, I have my own opinions, and I’m probably not the only one jaded from how quickly the tax came into effect, but before the referendum, I plan to get all the facts (voting runs between June 13th and July 22nd). Of course, there’s a lot of information out there (including the Voter Guide that will be mailed out next week), but I think the provincial site http://www.hstinbc.ca is worth a look – very easy to understand (and helpful for explaining to the layman person when you’re being peppered with HST questions!)
Another great option for settling the HST / no HST debate are the upcoming “HST Public Forums” held by a non-partisan third party – www.hstpublicforums.ca. These will be great for the accounting profession to get involved, get informed, and finalize the decision for yes or no. The events will have both yes and no proponents, will include an introduction from each side, followed by rebuttals, a Q&A session and closing statements. The yes proponents http://fighthst.com/ have indicated that either Bill Vander Zalm or Chris Delaney will be attending these events. The no proponents http://hstjobs.ca include David Robertson and Kevin Milligan.
Upcoming HST Public Forums:
June 2 (7:30pm – 9:00pm) @ Kwantlen
June 3 (7:30pm – 9:00pm) @ University of the Fraser Valley
June 4 (10:30am – noon) @ UBC – Telus Studio Theatre
June 7 (7:30pm – 9:00pm) @ SFU – Morris J Wosk Centre for Dialogue

This couldn’t have come at a better time. I’ve been in discussions with people on Adrian Dix’s Facebook page and it’s gotten way out of hand. Looking forward to inviting them down.
